What is an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)?

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is a certificate that indicates how much energy is being used to operate a building, and is indicated through a performance scale of A-G.
An EPC is valid for 5 years.

In 2020, The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy has, under section 19(1)(b) of the National Energy Act, 1998 (Act no. 34 of 2008), set out regulations that an EPC is required to be publicly displayed at the entrance of all buildings that fall into the criteria for compliance.

  • 1.  Buildings in the private sector that are over 2000m2, and
  • 2. Buildings that are over 1000m2 in the public sector are now required to display an EPC at their entrance.
  • 3. Penalties for non-compliance are defined as a R5.0million (ZAR) fine, or five (5) years imprisonment, or both should an organization not comply with the legislation by the 07 December 2025 deadline.
